Dr. Donald Bishop
Dr. Bishop graduated from the School of Optometry at the University of Waterloo with his “Doctor of Optometry”, In later years, he received his pharmacological therapeutics certification from Northeastern State University of Oklahoma. Dr. Bishop has been practicing Optometry in Alberta ever since graduating in 1983. In those years, Dr. Bishop has seen patients from a few months old to just under 100 years old. Current technology and practices are important to Dr. Bishop. This is why you may see newer technology and instrumentation each time you come in for your yearly eye exam. Dr. Bishop enjoys fitting contact lenses and especially those hard to fit ones; multifocal contact lenses in soft, rigid lenses, and to keratoconics.
Dr. Bishop has been away on foreign Gift of Sight Missions to such countries as: Bolivia, Laos, Tunisia, Peru, Dominican Republic, and Argentina. Locally, Dr. Bishop participates in year round programs where those financially less fortunate may receive free eye exams and glasses.
Dr. Bishop has 2 children. His daughter is a practicing registered nurse at the Rocky View Hospital and his son is now a licensed Optometrist with the clinic. Dr. Bishop grew up on a farm until the age of twelve when the family of six packed up and moved to the big city of Calgary. Now it’s big!
Dr. Pooja Anand
Dr. Anand graduated from the University of Calgary in 2003 with her Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in Human Biology. She then moved to Chicago, Illinois where she received her Doctorate of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry. She was a member of the National Optometric Students Association (NOSA) and was also a member of the Clinical Honours Dean's List. She is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), Alberta Association of Optometrists (AAO), and Calgary Society of Optometrists (CSO). Dr. Anand speaks in three languages (Punjabi, Hindi, and English) and loves travelling, volunteering, baking, and exercising.
Dr. Rakesh Tailor
Dr. Rakesh C. Tailor started his pre-career with Dr. Bishop and Associates in 1997 as a technician while obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Calgary. After graduation he decided to pursue his passionate interest in optometry in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He graduated in 2006 with honours as a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honour Society. Shortly after which he decided to return home to Calgary as a practicing Doctor of Optometry with Dr. Bishop & Associates. As such, he has been a familiar face with the organization and our patient for some time.
He is also a member in good standing with the Alberta Association of Optometrists, and the local Calgary Society of Optometrists. Every year, Dr. Tailor takes time out of his regular work to help support and distribute eye heath care around the world through OneSight program. Dr. Tailor also volunteers at CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society), which is a non profit organization with a series of programs and services dedicated to providing primary health care for adults and families living in poverty. He has traveled to Mexico, Punjab, Goa, and Thailand to help thousands of less fortunate individuals receive eye care and glasses at no cost through the eyeglass recycling program. He also has expert knowledge and experience in fitting specialty contact lenses such as SynergEyes.
Dr. Tailor is an avid Calgary Flames fan during the winter months, and in the summer when not working or traveling he enjoys spending time locally with family and friends. He also likes taking local road trips to the mountains to take in what Calgary and our surrounding areas have to offer.
Dr. Daniel Wang
Dr. Daniel Wang completed his first professional degree (MD) in Shandong University School of Medicine (China) in 1991. After working as an ophthalmologist in Qingdao Eye Hospital (Shandong Eye Institute) for 2 years, he accepted a postdoctoral position in Kumamoto University School of Medicine (Japan) and devoted a couple years of his life in medical research. Dr. Wang got his Doctor of Optometry degree in Pacific University College of Optometry in 2004.
Dr. Wang is actively involved in the blindness prevention and treatment missions including the ORBIS-the Flying Eye Hospital. Dr. Wang speaks native Chinese and fluent Japanese. Dr. Wang loves to play volleyball in his spare time. As a matter of fact, he played for his high school and University for 9 years. Different cultures and multi-disciplinary academic training have opened his eyes to be a better clinician. Dr. Wang has experience in myopia reduction/prevention through contact lenses. With extensive experience and a philosophy of care, Dr. Wang will strive to provide excellence in a gentle and informative manner.
Dr. Gina Mason
Dr. Gina Mason graduated with her Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University College of Optometry, outside Portland, Oregon, in 2001. She also holds a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary. Dr. Mason has been an Associate with Dr. Bishop since 2001. In addition to her efforts at Dr. Bishop, Dr. Mason is also active in the community, volunteering for both optometry and community initiatives. Away from her practice, Dr. Mason enjoys spending time with her young family and their busy schedule. Dr. Mason has been at the Northland Village location for most of her tenure with Dr. Bishop and enjoys the friendly and diverse patients that she sees.
Dr. Andrew Hoover
Dr. Andy Hoover has lived in Calgary since 1988. His undergrad studies were at the University of Calgary and he completed his optometric education in 2006 at the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Hoover has been with Dr. Bishop and Associates since graduating. In addition to yearly hometown days providing eye exams to the needy in Calgary, he has gone to the Dominican Republic twice to provide eye care to the less fortunate. When not working tirelessly at Dr. Bishop and Associates, he likes to spend most of his time with his wife and 2 young children. Growing up in and near the mountains, Dr. Hoover learned to enjoy hiking, climbing, and skiing throughout the year. He also enjoys his yearly goose hunt in Saskatchewan with his family including his 86 year old grandfather.
Dr. Vaneet Kaloti
Dr. Vaneet Kaloti graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 2001, and has been practicing in Calgary since then. She is passionate about her profession and enjoys seeing patients of all ages, from infants to seniors. She is committed to continuing education and is constantly expanding her knowledge base and methods of practice, through attending various local courses and the American Academy of Optometry education programs. She is dedicated to providing her patients with the best possible comprehensive vision care, using the many resources available in Calgary and the surrounding area. She also has expert knowledge and experience in fitting specialty contact lenses such as SynergEyes. Dr. Kaloti and her husband enjoy spending time outdoors with their two young sons.
Dr. Anh Nguyen
Dr. Anh Q. Nguyen grew up in Saskatoon and then moved to Calgary where she attended the University of Calgary. She graduated from InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry, in 2006 with Magna Cum Laude. She participated with ASVO/VOSH and the Lion Club, went on three missions to the Dominican Republic to provide humanitarian care to the impoverished.
Coincidently Dr. Rakesh Tailor and Dr. Andrew Hoover were her classmates. Dr. Nguyen was practising in Houston, Texas, before she moved back home to be with family.
Dr. Nguyen speaks Vietnamese and Spanish. She enjoys visiting new places, trying different foods and always on the look-out for exotic fruits. Her travels have led her to most major cities in the States and Europe. In her spare time, she likes to look up more places to explore, curl up with a good book, or play tennis with her friends.
Dr. Eric Bishop
Dr. Eric Bishop grew up in Calgary and being the owner’s son he has been involved with Dr. Bishop & Associates in the background since he was quite young. He completed his BSc in Biology at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He then went on to obtain his Doctorate of Optometry at Midwestern University’s Arizona College of Optometry. While in Arizona Dr. Bishop was the events coordinator for the Campus Lions Club, organizing and attending many free community vision screenings throughout the Phoenix area.
Dr. Bishop also accompanied the California Lions Giving Sight on two trips to Mexico (Mexicali and Tijuana) to provide free vision evaluation, ocular health care and glasses to the local impoverished residents. Research that Dr. Bishop completed during his Optometric education is currently in the final stages of preparation for publication in the peer review medical journal “Optometry and Visual Performance”, and should be published mid-2015.
In the final year of his education Dr. Bishop completed his Clinical Externships focusing in diagnostics imaging and ocular disease such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. During that year of externships Dr. Bishop attended the Veteran’s Affairs hospitals in downtown Detroit, MI and Providence, RI, Norton Sound Regional Hospital and surrounding villages in Nome AK, and a private practice in Glendale, AZ. Dr. Bishop also fits a variety of unique and different contact lenses for all different types of eye conditions; keratoconus, grafted and irrregular corneal fits along with astigmatic presbyopia.
Dr. Eric Bishop enjoys playing guitar, jamming in a band made up of high school buddies, photography and travelling.
Dr. Chelsea Gerlitz
Dr. Chelsea Gerlitz was born and raised in Calgary. She attended the University of Alberta where she obtained a B.Sc. before studying optometry at the University of Waterloo. In her final year of study, Dr. Gerlitz spent time interning with ophthalmologists in Florida as part of her Ocular Disease and Therapeutics rotation, as well as optometrists in Calgary, Olds, and Waterloo. In 2013, she graduated with honors and also received a CooperVision award for excellence in contact lens care. Dr. Gerlitz has a passion for travelling, and has completed a volunteer eye care mission in Belize with VOSH International. She also volunteers at CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society), which is a non profit organization with a series of programs and services dedicated to providing primary health care for adults and families living in poverty.
Dr. Gerlitz was excited to join the team here at Bishop and Associates, and is passionate about providing exceptional eye care for her patients. Her areas of interest include ocular pathology and trauma, pediatrics, and geriatrics. She is accepting new patients of all ages, and looks forward to fulfilling your eye care needs. She also has expert knowledge and experience in fitting specialty contact lenses such as SynergEyes. Dr. Gerlitz also knows how to help patients with dry eyes.
Dr. Gerlitz is a member of the Alberta Association of Optometrists, Canadian Association of Optometrists, and Calgary Society of Optometrists.
Dr. Steven Hoang
Dr. Hoang is a proud graduate of both the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and the University of Calgary. He pursued his passion for contact lenses by interning at a specialty contact lens clinic in Melbourne, Australia with internationally recognized optometrist Dr. Richard Lindsay. He managed many cases of corneal diseases including keratoconus. He is passionate about international eyecare, and has participated in two mission trips to Guatemala and Peru. Dr. Hoang has received two prestigious awards from Johnson&Johnson and the Canadian Association of Optometrists for his clinical excellence and exceptional leadership. He also has expert knowledge and experience in fitting specialty contact lenses such as SynergEyes.
Dr. Hoang is a travel buff, sports enthusiast, and avid reader. He is always on Yelp searching for the next best restaurant. Dr. Hoang volunteers on two committee boards for the Alberta Association of Optometrists in developing new graduate and practicing optometrists professionally. Dr. Hoang also volunteers at CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society), which is a non profit organization with a series of programs and services dedicated to providing primary health care for adults and families living in poverty.

Dr. Ashley Firby
Dr. Firby is a native of Windsor, Ontario where she completed her Bachelors of Science in Biology at the University of Windsor. She then attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating in 2008, she completed a residency in Primary Care where she mentored optometry students and worked closely with glaucoma, cornea, and retina specialists. Dr. Firby also received her fellowship with the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) in 2010 as well as poster presentations on ocular disease cases at AAO meetings. Dr. Firby returned to Ontario to practice until recently relocating to Calgary to be closer to family. Dr. Firby is enjoying spending time with her baby daughter, goldendoodle, and husband while exploring the rocky mountains. She enjoys hiking, yoga, and is an avid piano player. She is excited to be providing care to patients in Calgary.
Dr. Mark Wood
Originally from Manitoba, Dr. Mark Wood earned his B.Sc. from Brandon University before attending Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry, where he received his Doctorate of Optometry in 2016 as a member of Beta Sigma Kappa Honors Society. While attending Midwestern University Dr. Wood was a member of the Arizona Lions Club and participated in humanitarian trips with Arizona and California Lions members to both Mexicali, and Tijuana, Mexico. Where they provided eye examinations to underserved populations.
During his final year of education Dr. Wood completed Clinical Externships focusing on ocular disease, pediatrics, binocular vision, primary care and contact lenses. At the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, a Private Practice in Franklin, Tennessee, and a Marine Corp Air Station in Yuma, Arizona.
In his free time Dr. Wood enjoys curling, hockey, hiking, and traveling. Being new to Alberta he is excited for the chance to explore the mountains and what Calgary has to offer.
Dr. Melissa Ah-Seng
Dr. Melissa Ah-Seng grew up in Cochrane, Alberta. She attended the University of Calgary and graduated with a B.Sc. in 2010. She went on to complete her Doctor of Optometry in 2014 from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. Over the course of her training, Dr. Ah-Seng completed her clinical rotations at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science, Maroubra Optometrists in Sydney, Australia, Eye Associates of Pinellas in Pinellas Park, Florida, and at Iris in Calgary and Cochrane, Alberta.
When she isn't working, Dr. Ah-Seng can be found at the rock climbing gym, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, or playing with her pet rabbit at home.
She is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists, Alberta Association of Optometrists and the Calgary Society of Optometrists. Dr. Ah-Seng is excited to be joining Dr. Bishop and Associates, she is looking forward to fulfilling your eye care needs and is accepting new patients.
